20228
Diesel - Diesel-Electric
20228 (D8128) is a Class 20 diesel-electric locomotive, privately owned and now a permanent resident on the GWR. It was built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows and delivered in January 1966 — the first of a second order of 100 Class 20s, resuming production after a four-year gap following the completion of the original batch of 128 in 1962. The renewed order was a vote of confidence in what had proved to be one of the most reliable of the early Type 1 designs at a time when several contemporaries had already been found wanting.
As the first of the resumed build, D8128 was among the earliest Class 20s to be fitted with headcode boxes from new, replacing the disc indicators carried by the original batch. It was renumbered to 20228 under TOPS.
20228 moved to the GWR in 2020 and is currently undergoing restoration to serviceable condition, where it will join stablemate D8137 as part of the railway's resident diesel fleet.
