47105
Diesel - Diesel-Electric
47105 (D1693) is owned by The Brush Type 4 Fund and was built at Brush Electrical Machines' Falcon Works in Loughborough (Works No. BS455). It entered traffic on 6th December 1963 as D1693, working light from Loughborough to Old Oak Common via the Midland main line, Welsh Harp Junction, Dudding Hill and Acton Wells Junction. The locomotive was fitted with a Spanner Mk III steam heat boiler and vacuum brakes from new, with air brakes added between September and November 1969.
Allocated to Bristol Bath Road from new, 47105 spent its 30-year career at depots across the country. A notable ten-year spell at Cardiff Canton ran from 1975 to 1985, followed by time at Tinsley and Stratford. It was renumbered from D1693 to 47105 on 22nd January 1974 whilst at Immingham. Its final depot allocation was Old Oak Common from December 1991.
The locomotive was turned out in two-tone green from new, receiving BR Blue in November 1969, and later gaining a silver roof and black headcode panel in December 1987. It briefly carried the unofficial name "Goldcrest", applied at Tinsley TMD on 27th November 1989 and removed in August 1994 during preparations for repainting at the GWR.
Its last passenger working came on 2nd July 1992, working the 17:50 Paddington–Reading (1F50), the 19:15 Reading–Didcot (2C72), then empty stock to Oxford before working the 21:55 Oxford–Paddington. Its final revenue working followed on 7th October 1993, hauling an engineers' train (6Z10) from Old Oak Common West Yard to Southall Yard, then running light (0F70) back to Old Oak Common. The following day it worked the 08:30 Old Oak Common to Doncaster Belmont Yard (0D00), towing 47019. It was stored unserviceable at 08:45 on 1st November 1993.
47105 was withdrawn on 13th December 1993 and purchased by The Brush Type 4 Fund on 24th January 1994. The locomotive arrived at the GWR in April 1994 and was started for the first time in preservation just one month later. Its steam heat boiler, which had been isolated in April 1986, was reinstated on 27th February 2000 — making 47105 the first Class 47 to steam since 1987.
A ten-year overhaul followed, including a full repaint into BR Blue livery, and the locomotive returned to passenger service on 16th July 2021. It was temporarily named "Tim Leverton" at Toddington Station on 1st August 2008 in honour of the Brush Type 4 Fund's Chief Mechanical & Electrical Engineer, with the name removed the following day.
