47376
Diesel - Diesel-Electric
47376 (D1895) is owned by The Brush Type 4 Fund and was built at Brush Electrical Machines' Falcon Works in Loughborough (Works No. BS657). It entered traffic on 1st September 1965 as D1895, fitted with dual brakes from new and turned out in two-tone green livery.
Allocated to Tinsley from new, the locomotive spent much of its early career in the North East, with spells at Holbeck, Thornaby, Knottingley, Healey Mills and Immingham. It was renumbered to 47376 in February 1974 whilst allocated to Thornaby. By the late 1980s it was back at Tinsley, before spending its final working years based at Crewe Diesel in Freightliner service.
The locomotive carried several identities over the years. It acquired the unofficial name "Skylark" at Tinsley TMD on 21st November 1989, which was removed during overhaul in August 1995. It was then named "Freightliner 1995" at the Crewe Basford Hall open day on 28th August 1995 — the same overhaul that saw it become the first locomotive to carry the Freightliner Triple Grey livery. The names were removed at Southampton Maritime between June and October 2001.
Its last passenger working came on 6th January 2001, hauling the "Power Porter" railtour from Manchester Piccadilly to Tower Colliery. The locomotive worked the train from Manchester to Newport, where a Class 60 was attached for the run to Tower Colliery. The Class 60 then dragged the train back to Newport before 47376 worked on to Birmingham New Street, where it was replaced by a Class 92 after running low on fuel.
The end of its mainline career came on 8th June 2001 whilst working the 20:27 Leeds–Southampton freightliner (4O07). In the Oxford area, a piston dropped into the engine sump, writing off the Sulzer 12LDA28-C engine. The train was assisted to Southampton by a Class 57.
The Brush Type 4 Fund purchased 47376 in November 2002. Following arrival from Southampton Maritime, a replacement engine from sister locomotive 47295 was fitted at Ashchurch on 21st June 2003, and the locomotive was transported to the GWSR. It was renamed "Freightliner 1995" at Toddington on 24th September 2005.
As with all of the 47/3 fleet, 47376 was built without train heating, although it carried boiler water tanks and a through steam pipe from new. These were removed during successive overhauls.
