Tucked between rolling hills and golden fields, Winchcombe Station has a story as remarkable as the railway itself. Opened in 1906 as part of the Great Western Railway’s Honeybourne Line, it served the nearby market town until closing in 1960. When the original building was demolished, only memories remained — until our volunteers brought it back to life.

In a remarkable feat of dedication, they transported and rebuilt a similar period station from Monmouth Troy in Wales, creating the beautiful and authentic structure you see today. Every wall and window tells a story of craftsmanship, care, and community spirit.

Now the administrative heart of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway, Winchcombe is home to our Carriage & Wagon Department, where vintage coaches are lovingly restored, as well as our Permanent Way and Signal & Telegraph teams who keep the line running smoothly. The Tim Mitchell Building also hosts our education programme, welcoming thousands of schoolchildren each year to learn about the magic of railways and steam.

When December arrives, Winchcombe transforms into something truly special — the 'North Pole' Terminus of our much-loved Santa Express trains. Twinkling lights, festive music and a sprinkling of Christmas magic make it one of the highlights of the year for families and volunteers alike.

Alight Here For…

Just a scenic twenty-minute walk from the station lies the historic town of Winchcombe, known as the Walking Capital of the Cotswolds. Wander its honey-stone streets lined with independent shops, cosy pubs, and tearooms, or step back through time at Sudeley Castle, one of England’s most enchanting historic houses and the final resting place of Katherine Parr, Henry VIII’s last wife.

Winchcombe also sits on the Cotswold Way National Trail, offering beautiful walks through countryside once ruled by Saxon kings. Whether you’re here for a gentle ramble, a touch of history, or a family day filled with discovery, Winchcombe Station is the perfect place to begin your adventure.
