Inspiring School Visits on the GWSR

Hands-on learning, real-world history and unforgettable experiences for your pupils.

A visit to the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway is a memorable, curriculum-supporting day out that brings history, geography and STEM learning to life. From the thrill of travelling in a heritage carriage to exploring our Discovery Coach, and restoration workshops, pupils experience the railway as a living classroom - one filled with sights, sounds and stories they’ll remember long after the train ride ends.

Whether you’re planning a KS1 local history session, a KS2 transport topic, or a KS3 deep dive into Britain’s railway heritage, the GWSR offers rich opportunities for learning through experience.

What Your Pupils Will Experience

A Real Journey Through History

Travelling in a restored heritage carriage gives children a sense of how people once moved around the country. The movement of the train, the smell of steam, and the landscape rolling past the window all create a vivid context that textbooks can’t match.

Discovery Coach at Winchcombe

Our interactive Discovery Coach explores the history of the Honeybourne Line, how the railway was rebuilt by volunteers, and what rail transport looked like in the past. It’s fully accessible and ideal for KS1–KS3 enquiry-based learning.

Locomotives, Carriages & Craftsmanship

At Toddington, pupils can learn about the steam and diesel locomotives that run on our line, and discover how engineering, teamwork and problem-solving keep the railway running. The restoration work is a brilliant way to connect curriculum learning with real-world skills.

WW2 Evacuation Experience - Step Into the Past

One of our most popular visits is the WW2 Evacuation Experience, designed especially for KS2–KS3 pupils studying Britain during the Second World War.

Children arrive dressed as evacuees, gather on the platform with labels and luggage, and are “evacuated” by train to Winchcombe where they meet costumed volunteers. The experience includes:

  • Role-play activities and storytelling

  • Meeting characters such as billeting officers

  • Insights into wartime life, rationing and community

  • The chance to compare past and present travel

It’s immersive, memorable and rooted in real history — a powerful way to deepen understanding of the Home Front.

Refreshments

As part of your days visit to the railway, we can provide refreshments either at the tea rooms situated at Winchcombe, Broadway and Toddington Stations, or if you prefer, on the train itself while you are watching the countryside pass by. There are also refreshments available at Cheltenham Race Course Station. We pride ourselves that we are a volunteer run railway and as such all bookings for refreshments are subject to availability. Please also note that we will not be able to provide pre-booked on-train catering for groups at weekends or during the school summer holidays.

You’ll find toilets, seating areas, cafés and gift shops at key stations along the line, giving your group plenty of opportunities to rest, refresh and explore between trains.

How to Book

Booking is straightforward. Simply contact our group bookings team at [email protected] preferred date, group size and any special requirements. We’ll guide you through the options and help you plan a visit that fits neatly into your schedule. Please note that we cannot accept group bookings for our special event dates.

🚂 Key Takeaways for Your Visit

  • Arrival Time: Your group must arrive at the station at least 30 minutes before departure. The trains run on a strict schedule and cannot wait for late arrivals.

  • The 10-Day Rule: This is the magic number for changes. You must notify the railway in writing at least 10 working days in advance for:

    • Cancellations or date changes.

    • Correcting errors in your booking confirmation.

  • Missing the Train: If you miss your booked slot, you can try to catch a later train, but it depends on available space.

  • Discounts: Since you are a group (10+ people), you receive a 10% discount off the standard price, which should already be reflected in your quote.

  • Accessibility: Because these are heritage carriages, space is limited. If anyone in your group needs special assistance, you must let the Railway know in writing ahead of time.

💰 Refund & Payment Policy

  • No Show/Partial Group: If members of your party don’t show up, or the group cancels late, there are no refunds for pre-paid bookings.

  • Railway Issues: If the Railway has to cancel the service for reasons beyond their control, their liability is limited to a refund of what you paid.

📝 Pro-Tip

Check your confirmation email the moment it arrives. The contract explicitly states it is your responsibility to ensure they interpreted your requirements correctly.

We look forward to welcoming your school on board.
