Take a guided tour of our locomotive sheds, signal boxes and Carriage & Wagon works

Behind the Scenes Experience – A Full Day Immersed in the GWSR

Enjoy an unforgettable day out as we take you behind the scenes of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway. Designed exclusively for small groups of no more than six people, this in-depth experience offers rare access to the inner workings of our railway and the dedicated teams who keep it running.

Your friendly, knowledgeable guides will welcome you at the start of the day and remain with you throughout your journey. Together, you will explore areas not normally open to the public, including:

  • The Locomotive Department, where you’ll tour the engine sheds and see steam and diesel locomotives undergoing maintenance and restoration.

  • The Carriage & Wagon Works, home to our skilled volunteers who restore and maintain our fleet of heritage coaches.

  • A working signal box, where you will witness two trains crossing and gain a fascinating insight into traditional railway signalling in action.

Your guides will then accompany you for a full-line round trip behind both steam and heritage diesel traction. As you travel through the beautiful Cotswold countryside, they will share the history of the line, the story of its preservation, and how the railway operates today. Where possible, you will enjoy the journey from the comfort of First‑Class seating.

During the day you will be served a ploughman’s lunch, along with plenty of tea, coffee and cake to keep you refreshed.

You will leave with wonderful memories, a presentation certificate, and a selection of keepsakes from your special day.
